Austin Fire Ants

Do You Like Fire Ants?  Good I don't either.  Fire Ants can be very troublesome especially this time of year.  With the drought how it is more and more Ants will be trying to seek water and food from your home.  Fire Ants search mainly for water very far from their nest when it is very dry they will travel far distances (for Ants) to obtain the moisture they need.  There are a few steps that will help keep ants away from coming inside your house.

The First thing you should try and do is identify colonies around your house.  Ants like building pretty much anywhere, but they enjoy easy access points to food sources and water.  One spot they build frequently will be by your dryer vent on the outside of your house.  Here they have an easy entry point to plenty of water and usually food, because most dryer vents are near the kitchen in most houses.  this is a good place to start looking for the pest, next, search around the perimeter of your house they like the ends of porches, near the backd [Austin fire ant control] oor and front door.  Next check your flowerbeds and the rest of the yard.

After Identifying a mound the next step is control.  There are many organic pest control products out there right now that will kill ants.  If your going the organic route you can try some greenlight products.  Organic pest control most of the time is hit or miss and what usually will happen is the mound will die in one place and move 3 feet away to build another nest.  The key in killing a mound is getting to the queen.  Cinnamon  works sometimes along with baking soda, coffee grinds, grits and many others.  However, the best organic product used is Diatomaceous Earth it is very effective but costly.  It will work most of the time but dehydrating the ants so much they die.

The organic route will work sometimes but the best thing to do is use a low impact chemical product that will kill the queen.  "Over and Out" is a great low impact product that works a lot.  The control is seasonal good for roughly 3-6 months.  The active ingredient works for a multitude of pests but in low doses is speific to Fire Ants.  It works by leaching into the soil and killing the queen as it lands on your yard.  It needs to be spread exactly as described on the label and on every area of your yard.  You will know the spots in your yard that are missed because you will get a Fire Ant colony.  To avoid this be make sure and spread it all over your yard.

If you still don't have any luck the final step would be calling a professional out to either spray or spread.  The absolute best product out there right now is call Top Choice, [fire ant control Austin]  however it can only be purchased by a licensed pest control operator.  The success rate with top choice is above and beyond any other product on the market and it lasts for one year guaranteed.  Fire Ant free for an entire year sounds great and it is.  It works the same way as Over and Out but is specific to Fire Ants, thus it is an extremely low impact product.  It keeps other good pests from dying and leaves your yard the exact same minus pesky Fire Ants.  If it does get to the point where you need a pest professional let us know and we can help.

Got Weeds? How to Kill Nut Sedge, Nut Grass, Sedge Grass
If you are like me, you hate weeds in your lawn.  You do everything you can to keep your lawn properly maintained, and still...out of nowhere little green devils pop up.  I just love it.  Some weeds may look like they are nice little unassuming plants, but they are silent lawn assassins.  The best way to keep weeds out of your yard is, of course, by pulling them or treating them yourself.  Mowing your lawn regularly also helps, but it will not stop weeds from growing.  Most weeds can be handled by the homeowner, but there is one weed that is very difficult to kill, and that is nut sedge.  Nut sedge is commonly referred to as nut grass or sedge grass and it is a doozy.

[weed control]
Nut sedge is difficult to kill because it is connected underground by tubercles that keep it alive after you think you killed it.  Even though it is probably the hardest weed to kill ther
e are a few products that work.  The first is called Image and can be purchased by anyone.  I have not had a lot of experience with this product, however I have heard that it works.  Another product that works is Roundup.

Roundup will kill about 80-90% of nut sedge, but the nut sedge will come back.  So what you need to do is use the Roundup to kill the nut sedge then use a pre-emergent product like XL2G to keep it from coming back.  When using Roundup you must be very careful not to get any on plants that you want to keep.  Roundup is best when it is used by a professional and properly licensed applicator.  XL2G is a great product that I have used many times and have had a lot of success with it.  The unfortunate thing is that it can only be purchased by a licensed applicator, but it will keep almost all weeds away for 4-6 months.

The last product that works really well is Sedge Hammer, this product is expensive but it works really well.  Just like the name suggests it smashes through nut sedge to keep it down and out for good.  This product is expensive, but if you want complete nut sedge control, this puppy will do the trick.  Sedge Hammer can only be purchased by alicensed professional, but this product works the absolute best for killing nut sedge.

The best way to keep weeds like nut sedge out of your yard is by using proper lawn maintenance.  You need to come up with a plan of attack and use pre-emergent control to achieve the best results.  Weeds like nut sedge will run away and get out of control very quickly.  So, in order to keep those HOA letters out of your mailbox, the best thing to do is come up with a plan yourself, or give a lawn maintenance pro like myself a call.

Fly Control in Austin TX

Fly control is something that many of us don't really think about. Many of us don't loose sleep over the fly that was "buzzing" around in our kitchen earlier that day. We view roaches and ants as much larger problems, but flies are a big deal. Flies are a sign that sanitation in our homes, a restaurant, or our favorite store isn't up to par so to speak. It all comes from the living habits of the average fly and why they choose a specific location.

The female fly searches for decaying matter such as rotting fruit or a animal to lay their eggs. Then the eggs turn into maggots and the circle of life begins. A female fly can lay up to 1000 eggs in her life cycle twice which is around a month to 6 weeks. That is a lot of eggs and a lot of new flies to shoo away, almost every month. This is why prevention is very important to keep flies away from your house or place of business.

Prevention is made easy following a couple of steps. First, clean your dumpsters regularly, make sure that the garbage juice a [austin fly control] nd oils from food don't hang around your dumpster. It sounds like a dirty job, but is necessary to keep flies from coming into your business and around your customers. Second, keep everything that flies really like in a secure location, IE, grain, hay, food, candy, fruit, and especially animal carcasses. These are things that will drive flies directly to you. Finally, have a licensed pest control applicator come out and survey the area to give you pointers or solutions on how to stay "fly free". This will help you maintain better sanitation for your family or customers.

There is a product on the market called max force fly bait that is very effect in stopping flies before they start. It works by attracting the fly to a specific location, like a dumpster or the overhang from an outside door. Max Force is clear and can be easily used on walls, columns, doors and many other high traffic locations. The fly is attracted to the max force fly bait and dies in less than a minute. Max Force makes it easy to keep a clean house and business that is fly free and enjoyable.

You can also try perimeter sprays around the house or building, to slow down fly regeneration.  One thing is for sure flies are a pest that aren't just annoying they can lead to many future problems for your home and business.

If you have any questions or concerns about flies, fly baits, or proper sanitation feel free to contact me.

Celsius: Austin Weed Control

Weed control is something that many homeowners and renters have a lot of problems with. They make your lawn look unkept, even though you are out in your yard every week pulling weeds. This is a problem that many face and few actually can ever control. It is very difficult to keep all weeds out of your yard, even with proper weed control and herbicides. There are many factors that determine how you get weeds in and out of your yard. These factors include where your lot is located (ie) on a corner, next to a field and what your neighbors do for weed control. One factor always remains, how do you kill weeds that are in your beautiful yard without killing your grass? Easy it's, Celsius weed control.

Cel [weed control] sius is a herbicide by Bayer, that kills almost all of your weeds without killing your grass. Celsius will kill very tough weeds with one or two treatments. It kills all of these weeds without ( and most importantly) killing your southern grasses. This is one very important factor that many have been trying to accomplish for a very long time. Products like roundup will kill your weeds, but also does not let anything else grow in it's place. The problem with Celsius is that it is somewhat expensive and very slow acting. It usually takes roughly 2-4 weeks to see most control and it requires a licensed weed control professional, However if you can be patient on mother nature Celsius weed control will be very good to you.
